Can too much sleep cause depression?

Can sleeping too much change my brain chemistry and give me depression? Can somebody make a research about this for me?Or does any of you know anything about it?
Answer:
YES. Sleeping too much can and most likely will lead to depression. This is not something new. It is very well known in the medical field that inactivity leads to all sorts of psychiatric conditions (never mind somatic).

The claim that sleeping too much is only a symptom of depression is unfounded. There is no evidence for this. Instead of debating the egg and chicken problem, depression and inactivity are linked in a viscous circle: Decreasing activity leads to depression and depression leads to inactivity.

Besides the direct link between general activity and depression, how many indirect links do you think may exist? via obesity, cardiovascular disease, anxiety?,cognitive decline ...

At the very least activity does prevent depression in a large percentage of people. This doesn't of course mean that inactivity is the direct cause of depression. The cause of depression is thought to involve a multiple of possible factors - and inactivity is one of them.

'Depession' may indeed alter brain chemicals, but the depression itself IS activity of certain brain chemicals. Depression, just like thoughts and emotions ARE neural activity.
Sleeping too much is a symptom of depression.

yes it caused giddiness and laziness.which can lead to any thing bad so avoid
No, but sleeping too much can be a symptom of depression--as can not being able to sleep at all. (The same goes for overeating--or not eating at all).

Go to:

type in depression in their search box (upper right corner), and you'll find symptoms, treatments, and more.
No. Depression is the thing that alters brain chemicals. I remember a psychiatrist once saying that the reason a depressed individual sleeps so much is because of excessive brain activity produced by dreaming too much (too much REM)... and therefore deep sleep plays less of a part, resulting in a night's sleep being very unfulfilling.
If you think you are depressed, I think you need to do some reasearch for yourself, via google.
Good luck and take care
It can also be a symptom of narcolepsy, which can also be treated with medication.
